New Facilities

We’ve proposed to add four exciting new facilities to the new Angel Centre, based on the feedback that was provided at the previous consultation stage. We are confident that the new facility mix will allow all members of our community to find something that will keep them moving for years to come.

Immersive Cycling Studio

We are future-proofing the Angel Centre by including a dedicated, Immersive Cycling Studio. Immersive Cycling Studios use large-scale projections to immerse the class in a visual spectacle, guided by an instructor. Group Cycling is a staple of modern fitness that’s unmissable for many in our community. By providing this specialised, high-tech environment, we can offer an exciting audio-visual workout experience without compromising the availability of our main multi-purpose studios.

New Soft Play Area

We are delighted to include a multi-level, mixed ability Soft Play area, creating a vibrant destination for families across the borough. This facility is designed to introduce children to activity early in life, fostering healthy habits from the start. Crucially, it serves as an essential all-weather social hub where parents and families can connect, offering a safe and engaging environment regardless of the weather.

Innerva ‘Active Wellbeing’ Suite

To support older adults and those in physical recovery, we are introducing a specialised ‘Innerva Active Wellbeing’ suite. This power-assisted equipment offers a supportive, welcoming gateway to exercise for all. It is designed to be safe for managing conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and musculoskeletal issues. Beyond physical health, this suite provides vital social stimulation in a welcoming environment, ensuring that rehabilitation and staying active feels rewarding, accessible, and safe for everyone in our community.

Café & Social Space

Our survey highlighted that a café was the strongest motivator for those who do not currently use the centre. We listened, and the new design places a welcoming café at the heart of the facility. This space will serve as a vibrant social hub where you can relax after a workout, meet friends or family. By balancing fitness with social amenities, we are ensuring the Angel Centre is a destination for everyone to enjoy.

Environmental Impact

In our public consultation last year, an overwhelming 87% of you agreed that environmental sustainability is important. The new design champions this value, utilising solar panels and air source heat pumps to ensure the building is highly energy-efficient. This investment strives to meet a Building Research Establishment Environment Assessment Method (BREEAM) rating of Excellent to secure a greener future for our youngest community members.

Passive Carbon Reduction

High performance building fabric with low U-values for external walls, roof, ground floor and Glazing

Low air permeability to limit infiltration heat losses

Glazing G-value of 0.4 to limit solar gains

Building orientation and glazed facades orientated to minimise solar gains

Roof mounted photovoltaic panels will be installed to generate on-site renewable energy for the development.

Materials will be specified which have low embodied carbon, low VOC emissions, contain high recycled content, and will be locally sourced where feasible.

Water Consumption

Incorporating flow-limiting technologies to all water appliances

Leak detection on below ground water pipework

Temperature Control

A Hybrid VRF (HVRF) system will be utilised as an energy efficient heating / cooling system. This provides the same functionality of a conventional VRF system while using a more sustainable refrigerant.

A dedicated heat source pump (ASHP) shall utilise fully natural refrigerant with a seasonal efficiency in the region of 370%

Local controls will be provided to each space to allow independent temperature control

Where possible, natural and/or hybrid ventilation systems will be employed to reduce reliance on mechanical cooling and minimise the overall energy consumption

The building layout will be designed to avoid adjacency between areas with high heating demand and those requiring cooling

Lighting

Low energy LED lighting will be installed throughout the building

Passive Infrared (PIR) controls will be incorporated where practical.  To reduce unnecessary energy use

Materials and Architect’s Comments

The proposed new leisure centre features red brick with sympathetic brickwork detailing in keeping with the towns vernacular. This is combined with carefully considered feature rainscreen cladding in a variety of panel formats. Glazing and a living wall provide active frontage and connections between the public and the new centre. The positioning of the living wall on the building’s prominent corner promotes the developments sustainability goals and contribution to a greener, healthier environment.
