Positive Feedback for the Proposed New Look Angel Centre

Recent public engagement we carried out to introduce plans for the new Angel Centre has shown strong support for the redevelopment. The week‑long consultation (Feb 16 – 22) invited residents to view proposals, explore an exhibition, and complete a survey—and the results highlight an encouraging level of community approval.

Good Support for Plans

We asked for input from the community and you gave it. Over 6,500 people visited the dedicated project website to learn more about the proposals. An estimated 700 visitors attended the Angel Centre exhibition in person, where they were able to talk to the project team and reviewed the plans, and 436 people completed our survey. This level of interest and engagement confirms what we already knew – the development of this new facility is of great importance to our town.

What You Told Us

We asked people to complete a survey where they could share their views about the proposed new design of the building and the internal layout.

Survey results revealed that two-thirds (67.67%) of 436 respondents are in favour of the scheme to provide a new, contemporary centre that provides modern, accessible amenities for Tonbridge.

Over half (56.3%) believe the proposed design represents an improvement on the current facility. These figures indicate broad enthusiasm for modernising one of Tonbridge’s key community spaces for health, well-being and social connection.

Residents responded particularly positively to several design features like the red brick exterior, appreciating how it reflects the architectural character of Tonbridge town.

There was also verbal and written support for the sustainable, energy-efficient credentials of the design. The idea of an exterior green ‘living wall’ was given approval by over 70% of respondents. These results highlight our collective commitment to protecting the environment.

We listened, and responded

Feedback gathered in the 2025 summer survey helped shape the proposed amenities. As a result, the new Angel Centre design includes facilities you said you wanted like an expanded gym, and new dedicated immersive spin studio, new soft play area and a new café –  facilities that aim to create a modern, accessible, and community‑focused environment.

This time you provided feedback relating to the architectural design of the centre, which revealed some interesting and innovative ideas, some of which have helped us to refine plans for the new centre.

You told us you wanted more space for group fitness and community meetings, so we’ve altered the design of the multi-purpose studios  to create a larger, more flexible space. This gives the new Angel Centre a room that is the same size as the current Medway Hall, that can accommodate bigger group fitness classes and meetings.

And we’re continuing to hold practical and productive discussions with the many clubs and groups that use the current Angel Centre about their future in the new building.
